Traditional methods for analysing gene expression or the phenotypic effect of gene activation can only study small numbers of predetermined genes. The techniques of genome-wide inspection allow the study of the expression or systematic disruption of all genes in a cell. DNA microarrays are small solid supports to which there are spotted individual DNA samples, equating to every gene in an organism. When hybridized to labeled cDNA constituting the total mRNA population of a cell and each cDNA binds to its corresponding gene DNA and can be separately quantified. These new technologies are used to study the gene expression and its regulation.
